What source image size do I need for app icons?

Start from a square 1024×1024 image so every smaller size downscales cleanly. PNG with a transparent or solid background is ideal. Keep your important artwork away from the edges, since both iOS corner masking and Android adaptive cropping can clip content that sits too close to the border.

What is an Android adaptive icon?

An adaptive icon is built from two separate layers — a foreground (your logo) and a background — that Android composites and then masks into whatever shape the launcher uses, such as a circle, rounded square or squircle. This lets your icon look native on every device and supports motion effects. Our generator exports both layers plus the ic_launcher.xml that ties them together.

How many icon sizes does iOS need?

iOS uses roughly a dozen icon variants once you account for scale factors. These cover the home screen, Settings, Spotlight, notifications and the App Store, each at @2x or @3x. Rather than exporting them one at a time, this tool generates the entire AppIcon.appiconset with the matching Contents.json so Xcode has every slot it expects.

What is the difference between iOS and Android app icons?

iOS icons are a single flat image that the system rounds into a fixed rounded-square shape, with sizes defined in points and scale factors. Android icons use a dual-layer adaptive format that the launcher masks into many possible shapes, with sizes defined in pixels per density bucket. The shape, layering and sizing rules all differ, which is why you need two separate packages.

Can I use the same logo for both iOS and Android?

Yes. Upload one square logo and select Both Platforms, and the generator produces an iOS appiconset and an Android adaptive icon set from the same source. Because Android masks the foreground into shapes, keep your key artwork centered and within the safe zone so it reads well on both platforms without redesigning anything.

What is the safe zone for app icons?

On Android adaptive icons, only the central 66dp of the 108dp canvas is guaranteed to be visible — the outer ring may be cropped by the launcher's mask. That central area is the safe zone. Keep logos, text and key shapes inside it so nothing important gets clipped. The preview in this tool overlays the safe zone so you can check it before downloading.

How do I use the generated Contents.json?

Contents.json is the manifest Xcode reads inside an .appiconset folder; it lists each icon filename with its size, idiom and scale. Drop the generated AppIcon.appiconset folder — PNGs and Contents.json together — into your project's Assets.xcassets and Xcode automatically fills the App Icon slots. You should not need to assign any image by hand.

Does the generator support SVG input?

Yes. You can upload SVG, PNG or JPG. SVG is a great choice because it is resolution-independent, so every exported size stays perfectly crisp no matter how large or small. Whatever you upload, all rasterizing and resizing happens locally in your browser before the PNGs are packaged.

Do you generate dark mode app icons?

iOS 17 and later support dark and tinted icon variants, and Android offers themed icons through Material You. For best results, design your logo so it reads against both light and dark backgrounds — for example with sufficient contrast and no reliance on a single background color — and provide a transparent foreground so the system can render alternate appearances cleanly.

Do I need to add rounded corners myself?

No. Do not pre-round your icon. iOS applies its own rounded-square mask to the full-bleed square you supply, and Android applies the launcher's shape mask to the adaptive layers. If you add corners yourself you will get a double-rounded, inset look. Upload a square, full-bleed icon and let each platform handle the rounding.

Why is Google Play 512 but the App Store is 1024?

Each store sets its own marketing icon size. Google Play requires a 512×512 high-resolution icon for your store listing, while Apple's App Store Connect requires a 1024×1024 marketing icon. They serve the same purpose on different platforms, so this generator exports both from your single source image.

Is icon generation done locally, and is my logo private?

How do I install the icons in Xcode and Android Studio?

For Android Studio, copy the density PNGs into the matching res/mipmap-* folders and add the supplied ic_launcher.xml (and layer drawables) to enable the adaptive icon.
